Q&A
How did you find movement and dance, and what inspired you to teach?
I started dancing really young -- around 3 years old. When I was growing up, it was the one thing that I excelled at. School has never been my strong suit. But movement -- yes please!!! I started teaching when I was a teenager and ever since then, I just loved teaching movement. I have 900+ hours in yoga movement certification, have taken a plethora of dance/floorwork/pole trainings and classes, and generally just love supporting people in their movement and strength goals. It's incredibly rewarding and humbling.
How has your love of movement evolved throughout the years?
This has changed based on how my body has changed over the years. There have been times in my life where I have been in chronic pain due to degenerative disc disease. That went on for years and is kind of what lead me to yoga in the first place because I thought that my dance career would be ending sooner than I had hoped. I've always appreciated that through whatever iteration of my body, aches/pains, injury, mental state, etc. that I could always find movement accessible in some form or fashion. Usually no matter what is going on, we can find movement in some capacity.
How did you first meet Kathryn?
I met Kathryn through my longtime friend TIffany Maloney!! They had come to New Orleans for a visit with friends and took a pole lesson with me and came out to see shows that I was producing that weekend! We've been buds ever since!
Why did you say yes to teaching for Haus of Phoenix?
I said yes because it was very easy to see the kind of community that had been curated. Every single person that I have connected with through HOP has been nothing but kind, loving, and non judgmental. I know that I bring something to the programming that is a little different and was worried about how it would be received. It turns out I had nothing to worry about and trusted Kathryn's lead on this. I have truly enjoyed continuing to connect and get to know everyone.
What does community mean to you?
Community means being able to rely on each other with the truest form of trust and vulnerability when we are in need. It means stepping up to the plate to do your part and work within your strengths to benefit the greater good. It also means knowing when to step back and let others do what they excel at. We see this happen a lot in Louisiana especially when hurricanes happen. In a lot of ways, I really cherish those times because nothing matters in those moments except helping each other get to the other side.
What can we expect from your classes?
A lot of fun, a lot of exploration, and so many opportunities to explore movement with your whole body!
Anything else you want to share!
I am just really excited to continue to teach and get to know everyone in this community. I feel so fortunate to have this platform to share what I love about movement!
