Professor Phoenix: Gender & Sexuality in Sports with Kate Fagan

Kate Fagan aka Kate from the Hallway joins us this Thursday at 5pm EDT on Zoom to discuss gender and sexuality in sports. With seven years at ESPN and currently working for Meadowlark Media, Kate has a prolific background in sports journalism, is the co-host of the podcast OFF THE LOOKING GLASS, and authored THE REAPPEARING ACT, WHAT MADE MADDY RUN, and ALL THE COLORS CAME OUT. She’s also an Emmy-award winning journalist, #1 New York Times bestseller, and professional wrangler of Ashi Budig — but now I’m just bragging. Staying on topic: I asked Kate to give a brief synopsis of why she picked the articles for our Professor Phoenix talk, so if you haven’t had time to read them, please do before joining the conversation. And of course, bring any other questions with you! Click the titles to read.

Owning the Middle: this is a profile of WNBA star Brittney Griner, which given her current detainment in Russia, is especially relevant. Griner was the first WNBA draft pick to come out before they turned pro.

The Glass Wall: this is an enterprise piece about how gender (and sexuality) impacts female coaches -- often limiting them.

Unhealthy Climate: this is a reported piece about anti-gay recruiting tactics in women's college basketball. The goal is to recognize the long history of shame that has been embedded in women's sports.
