I Am a Burrito of Sadness
I am a burrito of sadness.
I suppose I should explain. I normally associate a burrito with glory: layers of goodness, comfort, complexity — hell, I even named our premier Haus of Phoenix subscription after burritos. But around the passing of our beloved Ashi on December 23rd, I stumbled upon an illustration of a sad burrito burrowed in the folds of its tortilla, entitled: I Am a Burrito of Sadness.
I had never felt so seen. And as it turns out, I am not alone.
2023 has been wrought with layers of both personal and societal heaviness, and I don’t just mean for myself. I’ve heard this from YOU: in our Haus of Phoenix pre-class chats and private app threads, in our Inky Phoenix book club meetings, in your social shares, as well as from personal friends and family members.
There’s no antidote for being human — it is simply hard. Which is why I’ve listened carefully — to both y’all and myself — about what we need and what can be done to feel better. So we launched our Feel Good program in February: six 20 minute practice to help you bridge the joy gap.
(Just FYI: Joy gap (n): The space between dread and happiness.)
And you know what? It worked. They were little bursts of joy. Kinda like a summer cherry tomato — you know, if you’re into that kind of thing. We also did a series of meditations and corresponding classes around all of the chakras (both educational AND colorful). March arrived with the pure joy that is Indu Arora and her Yoga of Common Sense guest class. This was by no means an asana practice, but it was the closest (and calmest) I’ve felt to yoga in years. She is a true gift.
Now April is here, and we’ve opened up our Haus of Phoenix meditations to ALL subscription levels for the entire month. I hope you’ll join us as I’ve paired each Meditation Monday with a Tuesday Haus Yoga practice to guide us from the seed of an idea to the full bloom of reality. Writing these have given me purpose and intention, and I’m hoping they’ll do the same for you.
All this to say: thank you for being here. Thank you for supporting our small, queer-owned company. Thank you for being the inclusive and curious people I want and need to be surrounded by, because your joy helps me remember mine.
