Beltane Ritual for Sexual Harmony
Have you ever danced around a maypole (or desperately wanted to)? Or maybe you have memories of creating homemade May Day baskets stuffed with wild flowers to anonymously leave on a neighbor’s doorstep. The later fills me with childhood nostalgia, while the former is a phallic symbol meant to represent the union of two as one (cue Spice Girls, maestro!).
The actual history of behind May Day comes from the pagan holiday known as Beltane: the ancient Celtic celebration of fertility. Falling halfway between spring equinox and summer solstice, it is the perfect time to not only celebrate the coming of summer, but to celebrate and honor our sensuality. And the best part? Sensuality doesn’t require a partner! Use this ritual as a way to celebrate your ability to be wild and free, or share it with a lover. Either way, usher in this new season with passion and fire!

Moon Rituals include two rituals per month (both full and new moon): one live, and one emailed to encourage your personal practice. Moon Rituals are available with The Coven Pass or The Full Burrito. Beltane Ritual for Sexual Harmony
Tools needed:
2 candles (green for fertility, red for passion)
4 flowers (red/orange flowers such as roses or wildflowers)
A jar of water or handmade May Day basket*
Lighter or matches
Incense such as cinnamon, vanilla, or jasmine
*cut a large piece of paper (feel free to use wrapping paper or decorate yourself) into a triangle and roll into a cone shape. Secure with tape. You can stop here or punch two holes and thread with ribbon to hang.
The ritual:
Dress yourself in something that makes you feel comfortable, beautiful, and free. Light your incense of choice letting the smoke flow over your body and into the space. If you’re comfortable casting a circle, do so now. Otherwise take a comfortable seat and close your eyes. Enjoy three full breaths as you focus on concept of being wild and free.
Open your eyes and place your flowers and vessel between your two candles. Light your green candle first. As you do so, say:
Goddess of all things wild and free, I welcome your growth, so mote it be.
Next, light your red candle, and as you do so, say:
Lord of all things wild and free, I welcome your fire, so mote it be.
Start to place each flower individually into the basket or water, counting and saying the below aloud as you do so:
One for love.
Two for desire.
Three for passion.
Four for fire.
Depending on how you choose to celebrate your love and sexuality, you can now offer this bouquet to your lover/partner or place the bouquet next to your bed as you enjoy your own body. Before bestowing upon yourself or lover, say:
May I/we be as nature herself,
Wild and free.
This is my desire,
so mote it be.
